Decal Process
The following is a brief description of our production process. Keep in mind that each individual step contains many steps itself. Making a high quality ceramic decal is a lot of work!
- “Vectorize” artwork using Adobe software (part of the one-time set-ups)
- Separate the colors in the artwork (part of the one-time set-ups)
- Create films for each color in the artwork. (also, part of the one-time set-ups)
Every subsequent step has to be done each time our supply of decals for a piece of art runs out.
- Mix ink (matching color by eye) for each color in the artwork.
- Use films to create a screen for each color in the artwork.
- Print the colors one at a time, ensuring that every subsequent color matches the registration of the first color.
- “Clear-coat” the decals. This allows the decal to be transferred from the decal paper to the ceramic ware.
- Type lettering(names), create a screen for the lettering, and print lettering.
- Clear coat lettering.
- Soak the decals and lettering in water, slide them onto the ceramic ware, and squeegee in place.
- Fire the ceramic ware at approximately 1500° F overnight.
Pack and ship once cooled.
